I bought a weird sesame cracker/cookie thing at a market in Chinatown the other day. It was pretty good, but I have no idea what it was. I was able, however, to play around with the Emacs input methods to get the text on the bag into the computer:
北京稻香村食品集团精制
My plan was to put the text into Babelfish and see what came out.
Babelfish helpfully says:
The Beijing rice fragrant village food group purifies
.
Now, I have no idea what that means. But I think that it
is the name of the company that manufactured the product, not the
name of the product itself. Or maybe it is a slogan of some sort.
Another idea was to try searching Google. But no results were returned.
This product is clearly manufactured for export, because the nutrition information is in English, and the text above was transliterated. (In fact, it's only because of the Pinyin transliteration that I had any hope of getting the text into the computer.) The ingredients were also in English, which reasurred me that the snack is vegetarian. So why couldn't they manage to put the product name in English?
I guess I am not meant to know.
